About Dashi

Pronounced dah-shee · ˈdä-(ˌ)shē

Dashi is the foundational stock of Japanese cuisine—a quiet, elemental broth made from kombu (kelp) and bonito that is the literal culinary source of the umami flavor. It gives ramen and miso soup their deep, savory soul. Fittingly, it is also the name of the fictional food magazine you are looking at: the spiritual successor to Umami, the beloved demo that welcomed a generation of developers to Drupal.

Cooking Up Something New

Before 2017, a fresh Drupal install offered endless potential but a notoriously cold welcome—a blank, structural void waiting for instructions. It was a hard thing to taste. To change this, the community didn't just build a template; they built a kitchen. They dreamed up a fictional food magazine called Umami to give that empty space warmth, flavor, and a heartbeat.

Instead of filling the site with sterile lorem ipsum and generic stock photos, the community rolled up their sleeves. Developers cooked the recipes in their own homes, photographed their meals, and wrote the stories. When the doors opened in 2018, newcomers weren't greeted by abstract concepts. They were invited into a vibrant, tangible world of deep-pan pizzas and vegan brownies, making a complex platform feel instantly human.

Same Kitchen, New Stock

Dashi carries that homemade legacy forward for Drupal CMS. It features the same cherished Umami recipes in English and Spanish, but the underlying architecture is entirely new. Built with modern, intuitive layout tools and edit-in-place components, its design is a warm, editorial take on a modern food magazine.

Think of it as a welcoming appetizer: enough to taste what the system can do, but light enough to invite you to start cooking yourself. Dashi is fictional. The pasta bake is not. Go and make it.
